What is Cannabidiol, or CBD for short

CBD - the natural wonder drug

For many hundreds of years, people have used the cannabis plant as a medicine. The sedative effect of the active ingredient CBD (cannabidiol) and the intoxicating effect of the active ingredient THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) have always fascinated mankind. CBD, a constituent part of the cannabis plant, has a calming, relaxing effect on many people, which can also improve the ability to concentrate. Furthermore, there are many reports from people who testify that consuming CBD oil has helped alleviate various kinds of pain. In addition, the regular intake of CBD oil can have a positive effect on the prognosis of various, sometimes serious, illnesses.

Cannabis plants and products with more than a certain small THC concentration (0.2%) are illegal in most countries around the world. Exceptions to this are now (state-regulated), for example, places such as Uruguay, California, Washington State, Colorado and the Netherlands. But the legal provisions regarding cannabis are also less strict in some other countries. So there are, for example, "coffee shops" where people can buy cannabis in Barcelona, in the form of clubs. Furthermore, in the Free State of Christiania in Copenhagen, the acquisition and consumption of cannabis is also tolerated and part of the local culture.

However, in most other countries, the cultivation, sale and even consumption of cannabis and THC-containing products with more than a certain THC concentration is subject to prosecution. The cultivation and processing of hemp or industrial hemp with less than 0.2% THC concentration, however, are legal throughout the EU. Thanks to this legal regulation, you can buy CBD oil in almost every country in the world.

The active substance CBD, and thus products only containing CBD, are allowed, for example, in Germany. The typical form, cannabidiol oil, is legal, for example, if its THC content does not exceed 0.2%. The following text will inform you solely about the active substance cannabidiol and the natural medicine CBD oil derived from it. You will learn a lot about the history, the possible effects and the many benefits of cannabidiol oil.

The history of cannabidiol

As already mentioned, humankind has valued the versatile effects of the cannabis plant for centuries. However, the chemical composition and the different modes of action of the plant only began to be researched in the second half of the 20th century.

The discovery of CBD

Chemists from the University of Illinois, USA, first discovered and extracted CBD in 1940. However, at first the substance was wrongly classified as toxic and the chance of it having positive effects on the human body was excluded.

For the next 20 years, CBD remained largely unexplored, as there were very few studies investigating this field. Only after nearly 20 years, in 1963, was it finally become possible to determine its chemical composition. This discovery is attributed to the chemist Raphael Mechoulam, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In addition, he and his research group succeeded in isolating the now more well-known active ingredient THC one year later. From then on, there was the basis for the synthesis of THC and cannabidiol - and thus also for cannabidiol oil.

The medical potential of CBD is discovered

Despite this tremendous progress in CBD research, the field was relatively quiet for another 10 years.

Only in 1973 did CBD receive more attention, when a Brazilian research team was able to demonstrate that it reduced epilepsy symptoms in animals. A few years later, tests were carried out on humans to see if CBD oil reduced symptoms of epilepsy - with some success. In addition, shortly thereafter, its anti-anxiety property was recognised in patients, for example, with anxiety disorders.

Because of these discoveries, the possible medical effect of CBD in the following years was the subject of extensive research. For example, in the 1970s, it was discovered that nausea and sleep disorders could be treated with cannabidiol oil.

In the early 1980s, Mechoulam and his colleagues discovered the anti-psychotic potential of CBD. However, it took more than 10 years for this to be openly tested on humans.

At the end of the 1980s, scientists finally discovered the endocannabinoid system in the human body. This is still far from fully explored. However, some studies have identified relationships between the endocannabinoid system and falling asleep, appetite control, pain and cancer. It is important to note that CBD oil can only have an analgesic effect: it does not cause any pain or worsen it.

Furthermore, only positive effects on the progression of cancer have been found to date. There are now many positive testimonials, especially regarding sleep disorders. In addition, its effect as an antioxidant (in particular) has been detected several times.

CBD (oil) becomes legal

Partly due to such studies, the legal situation regarding cannabis has eased, particularly with regard to products only containing CBD. Today, the sale and possession of cannabis products containing THC is legal in some countries, as previously mentioned. Even more countries allow the use of cannabis products for medical purposes or research. By contrast, CBD is now legal worldwide and can be freely sold or purchased. The entirety of the research has contributed greatly to the fact that CBD is becoming increasingly important in medicine.

Meanwhile, as already mentioned, cannabidiol oil and other CBD-containing products are completely legal and freely available around the globe.

The mode of action of CBD oil

As discussed previously, the active ingredient CBD (and especially products such as CBD oil) is receiving ever-more attention. Many people confuse this constituent of the cannabis plant with the second, psychoactive ingredient THC, because this is much better known. By contrast, CBD does not induce psychoactive effects and is, as mentioned, completely legal in every country. Although cannabidiol oil has not been approved as a drug, it is increasingly being used as an adjunct treatment, due to its broad range of beneficial effects.

In the meantime, there are numerous user reports and, in some cases, studies on some possible applications and modes of action of CBD oil.

For the following diseases or illnesses, for example, taking cannabidiol oil on a regular basis may relieve pain, help the illness to pass, and improve negative symptoms:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders or panic attacks
  • Sleep disorders
  • Cancer
  • ADHD and ADD
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Epilepsy
  • Schizophrenia
  • Multiple personality disorder
  • Arthritis (commonly called rheumatism)
  • Arthrosis
  • Inflammation
  • MRSA
  • Migraines
  • Cramps
  • Nausea
  • Digestive problems
  • Fractures

Although this list already includes a great many illnesses or complaints, it still does not show all the possible applications. Nowadays, it is believed that taking cannabidiol oil on a regular basis can help with more than 100 diseases.

In the following, some of these diseases are briefly presented and the effect of CBD oil is described. In particular, the positive effect on a host of symptoms and side effects of the individual diseases is described. These symptoms, for example, nausea, migraines, sleep problems, etc., can occur in isolation from other illnesses, of course. Even in this case, CBD oil relieves the symptoms and can, for example, counteract sleep problems effectively.

Cannabidiol oil for depression

In recent years, several studies have been done on treating mental illness with CBD. For depression, in particular, findings suggest that symptoms have been alleviated and the use of CBD has even helped with healing.

Depression is a mental illness in which the messenger dopamine is released in too small an amount in the nervous system. Furthermore, depression can also be genetic. Malformations of the brain prevent messengers such as dopamine from docking. Depression severely complicates the daily lives of those affected by symptoms such as listlessness, a lack of self-esteem, sleep disorders, eating disorders or anxiety.

In both types of depression, CBD oil can aid the healing process and relieve symptoms. The active ingredient CBD can help to regulate the messenger in the nervous system. Thus, for example, dopamine or serotonin levels can be increased and contribute to increased happiness. This can lead to a more positive view of one's own life and give an important boost in facing everyday life.

Furthermore, cannabidiol oil helps to alleviate symptoms that are often associated with depression. These include the symptoms already mentioned, such as sleeping and eating disorders, listlessness, a lack of self-esteem or anxiety.

Treat anxiety disorders or panic attacks with cannabidiol

Anxiety or panic attacks are among the most common ailments worldwide. In principle, fear's role is always to protect us from a dangerous situation or help us to escape from it. However, if this fear crops up for no reason in harmless situations or certain everyday contexts, it is referred to as an anxiety disorder or a panic attack.

Anxiety disorders or phobias of certain things or stimuli affect sufferers massively in everyday life, for example, as they avoid everyday situations.

People who suffer from social phobia, say, avoid large groups of people or, in general, situations in which they would meet new people, in particular.

According to studies and numerous user reports, cannabidiol inhibits anxiety and can also have a mitigating effect. It is particularly suitable as an adjunct natural remedy for the treatment of anxiety disorders, phobias and panic attacks.

CBD, for example, inhibits the excessive release of messenger substances in our brain, or more precisely, in the amygdala. In a panic attack, this small gland secretes far too much of messengers such as adrenaline. As a result, it floods our brains with stimuli, which then trigger fear.

Cannabidiol can reduce the excessive secretion of these "fear messengers" and thus mitigate or alleviate a panic attack.

The use of CBD oil by cancer patients

Cancer is one of the most widespread and serious diseases in the world. Numerous research institutions are looking for a cure for this disease, but they haven't had much success to date. In some cases, chemotherapy or radiation can help, but in others these treatments have no effect.

Because of these limited options, many people look for alternatives, stumbling across the natural remedy CBD (for example) on their search. Studies have shown that the drug cannabidiol can slow down the growth of tumours. In addition, it is believed that the substance can kill malignant cells and prevent new blood vessels from being created around a tumour.

Furthermore, cannabidiol oil has a positive effect on many side effects caused by cancer, drug-based treatment or chemotherapy. For example, it relieves symptoms such as headache, nausea, digestive problems or insomnia. In addition, CBD oil has a calming and relaxing effect and can contribute to patients' well-being.

CBD instead of Ritalin for ADHD and ADD

In the case of attention deficit disorder or hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD), sufferers mainly suffer from concentration problems. In ADHD, hyperactivity occurs on top of this, manifesting as extremely extroverted behaviour, for example.

Both forms of the illness are particularly common in children and considerably complicate their schooling, among other things. Those affected cannot concentrate in the classroom. As a result, they lose their connection to what's being taught, or attract attention through their hyperactive behaviour and disrupt the classroom.

The best-known drug for this disease is Ritalin. It compensates for the high level of cortisol and the low level of dopamine in the brain, thereby relieving the symptoms described. This treatment, however, often goes hand-in-hand with unpleasant side effects such as sleep problems or loss of appetite.

CBD also has a very positive effect on the balance of cortisol and dopamine. As a result, it represents a very good and ever-more popular alternative to Ritalin, without any known side effects. It can, for example, promote concentration, have a soothing or relaxing effect and make everyday life much easier for sufferers.

Treating Tourette syndrome with cannabidiol oil

CBD oil has also had some success in the treatment of Tourette syndrome. This condition is a neuropsychiatric disorder that starts to occur in childhood. It manifests itself through physical and verbal "ticks", such as repeated jerky movements or (often vulgar) statements.

Studies investigating the treatment of Tourette syndrome with CBD oil have shown that it can have a host of beneficial effects on the symptoms and manifestation of the illness. For example, the regular use of cannabidiol oil reduced the frequency of ticks. Furthermore, it was observed that the "ticks" that did occur were weaker. For example, jerky movements were less pronounced and spontaneous exclamations, which often contain vocabulary that is not appropriate in a social context, are less dramatic.

In addition, CBD oil also helps with sleep problems and the manifestation of anxiety. There are also some positive user reports discussing how it can inhibit aggression and angry outbursts.

Treating Parkinson's disease with CBD oil

In Parkinson's disease, nerve cells in the brain die off. The cells affected are responsible for controlling our motor skills. The messenger dopamine, in particular, is responsible for producing and regulating them. If it is produced in insufficient quantities, the body will be missing nerve cells responsible for its motor functions. This results in sufferers experiencing noticeably restricted motor skills and uncontrolled twitching.

Cannabidiol oil can help stem the uncontrolled twitching and pain suffered by Parkinson's patients. Motor impairment is the worst burden for those affected. There are some user reports and even live videos which state that the symptoms plaguing sufferers have visibly decreased after taking CBD oil.

Here, as well as in the cases of ADD and ADHD, CBD affects dopamine levels and can thereby correct the imbalanced distribution of it. In addition, cannabidiol has a positive effect on the renewal and separation of nerve cells. In Parkinson's disease, too, the anti-inflammatory function of CBD comes into its own, as Parkinson's disease often goes hand-in-hand with pain and potential inflammation. In a stressful illness such as this, mental problems such as anxiety or depression often arise. As described previously, they can be treated very effectively with cannabidiol oil.

Although CBD oil cannot completely cure Parkinson's, according to many user reports, the symptoms can nonetheless be successfully mitigated and, in some cases, even completely inhibited.

Cannabidiol oil for multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS for short) is a chronic neurological disease of the central nervous system. In most cases, it occurs between the ages of 20 and 40, and more than two-thirds of cases are in women. Neither the exact cause nor a cure have been found so far. It is believed that MS is caused by an autoimmune reaction. Nerve sheaths in the brain and spinal cord are damaged by inflammatory lesions. This interrupts the forwarding of signals, and can thus lead to neurological deficits.

Typical symptoms of MS include issues with motor skills, visual and speech disorders, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, fatigue (extreme exhaustion), pain, as well as mental illness as an accompanying symptom.

Due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory action, CBD can work well to treat pain in people with MS. It is also believed that CBD can reduce inflammatory lesions. However, this has not yet been sufficiently researched or scientifically proven. In addition, treatment with cannabidiol oil has been shown to be very effective in the event of a "fatigue attack", i.e. the sudden onset of extreme weakness. There are also some online user reports from people who have been able to alleviate their MS relapses thanks to CBD.

Unfortunately, CBD cannot cure MS, but it can contribute to the more positive progression of the disease and reduce side effects. Sufferers claim that their quality of life has improved significantly thanks to the regular intake of cannabidiol oil.

Cannabidiol can have a positive influence on the progression of diseases

The cannabis plant has been viewed as a medicinal plant for centuries and was used as such early on in the practice of naturopathy. Its positive effect is due to the active ingredient cannabidiol. It has a calming effect on the individual and can boost a person's ability to concentrate. Cannabidiol is also often associated with an analgesic effect.

Is cannabidiol allowed in Germany?

The use of cannabidiol in Germany is permitted by law. Here, the THC content is less than 0.2 percent. Cannabidiol oil can be used as the basis for various medicines and remedies. In recent decades, the medicinal effect of cannabidiol has been extensively studied. For example, researchers have found that it has a positive influence on patients with anxiety disorders, but also that it can have a beneficial effect on sleep disorders and nausea.

It can be used to treat numerous diseases

To date, cannabidiol oil is not considered to be a drug in its own right. However, it is used alongside treatments. It has proven itself, for example, in cases of cancer and ADHD, but also of epilepsy and arthrosis. Furthermore, it can help with migraines, cramps of various types and inflammation.
